Oh My Dog: How to Choose, Train, Groom, Nurture, Feed, and Care for Your New Best Friend Review

I give this book five stars, because it is exactly what it claims to be, and I consider it a great resource.

I've had happy, healthy dogs all my life, and I never knew most of the stuff about behaviors and nutrition mentioned in this book. Once I read the chapter on nutrition and how to read the food labels, I checked my well-known, trusted dog food label only to be appalled at the contents. I'm changing the food ASAP.

I don't get the bad reviews; I can only postulate that some of the reviewers misunderstood the book's purpose - a reference guide - and thought they were getting something else. The product description pretty much sums it up as far as what the book entails.

It is pretty clear that the author's intention for this book is to provide anyone who has a dog, or plans to get a dog, a resource of basic information owner's should know; especially if you don't use a professional trainer.

Shop For The Aloha Quilt: An Elm Creek Quilts Novel

I was so excited for the next installment of The Elm Creek Quilters, as I am moving to Hawaii, and here came The Aloha Quilt. But I was so disappointed. This one is so depressing, I wondered several times if I'd even finish it. I never expected DEPRESSING, but that is just what this one is. Beware, before you buy this lastest Elm Creek Quilter book, it's not an uplifting story.Get more detail about The Aloha Quilt: An Elm Creek Quilts Novel.

Order The Bullpen Gospels

Having listened to Keith Olbermann on "Countdown" extol the virtues and delights of this book, I bought it. That's $9.99 and 5 hours of my time I'll never get back although I did e-mail Olbermann to ask him to refund my money. There is no refund for my time, however. I am writing to tell you to save both your money and your time. This book, while it starts out fairly amusing, degenerates into what I would term as typical male adolescent humor as it focuses almost entirely on crude bathroom humor and the everlasting and pointless discussions about sex, sexual fantasies, male genitalia, and attempts to conquer hot babes, no matter how tasteless the quest. There were some moments of salvation near the end when the author was dealing with his father and alcoholic brother, but those fleeting glimpses of humanity did not redeem the otherwise vain exercise in recounting a boring and sad autobiography. I suppose men might like this book a lot more than I did, and I won't even try to explain the differences in the sexes as it pertains to writing about sports experiences. It will be a long time before I'll be dumb enough to bite on another book having to do with baseball if this missive is truly what the sport is all about.Get more detail about The Bullpen Gospels.

Purchase Leadership and Self-Deception: Getting out of the Box

I think this book is wonderful. The basic concept is that all of us have had a bad day, even bad months or bad years. If we all work in the same organization it is everyones job to support the person who is having a challenging time.

It encourages all of us not to point the finger, but to look within. Is there something we could do to help? Is there a reason why we aren't doing are best to make other peoples lives easier? Isn't the overall goal: success for the organization? Even a successful marriage / family life.

We need to focus on "helping others/giving" rather than "pointing a finger". I struggle with it every day. But I am a better person because of this book. Employees who read this book are better employees. I am asking people to read this book prior to a job interview with our organization. We are a small non profit in Tampa, FL called Community Stepping Stones, and everyone needs to be a "team player".Get more detail about Leadership and Self-Deception: Getting out of the Box.

Cheap What the Dog Saw: And Other Adventures

You know those audio books you listen to and come away thinking "I could listen to that person for hours and never get bored?" This was one of those books. I loved this collection of Malcolm Gladwell's best pieces from the New Yorker.

The content of this book was fascinating, ranging from the success of famous (Ron Popeil) and infamous (Enron), to social issues like birth control and homelessness. Each topic is explored on many levels, using peripheral data, stories and studies that all tie together into one larger theme. It is easy to see why his story on Ron Popeil won an award - it was highly entertaining and informative.

The only section that gave me any troubles at all was one that dealt with the stock market. That is one of those subjects where my eyes tend to glaze over and I doze off. It's a credit to the author that I learned a bit about stocks (even though I wasn't as enthralled with it as I was with the other chapters).

This is an excellent book for anyone who enjoys finding out what makes certain people tick, and what makes some ideas successful.Get more detail about What the Dog Saw: And Other Adventures.

Cheapest The South Beach Diet Quick and Easy Cookbook: 200 Delicious Recipes Ready in 30 Minutes or Less

I bought this to accompany the South Beach Super Charged book to have more recipes. This book compliments the Super Charged because the recipes are labeled Phase 1, 2, or 3. Having this header note takes the guess work out of can I eat this recipe now or wait till Phase 2 or 3.

Additionally, these recipes can be made to take to potluck parties that will be occuring over the summer. Now I KNOW I can eat something, feel like I'm treating myself and not slowing/stopping my weightloss.

The fact that these recipes can made in 30-minutes or less is another bonus for me. I highly recommend this cookbook. IF you are not sure, then check it out at your local library.. I always do that before buying. Enjoy!Get more detail about The South Beach Diet Quick and Easy Cookbook: 200 Delicious Recipes Ready in 30 Minutes or Less.

Discount Forgotten God: Reversing Our Tragic Neglect of the Holy Spirit

This is the second book published by the author of "Crazy Love" (which is one of the greatest books published in the last few years). Those familiar with Chan's previous work will undoubtedly love this one. In it, he explores the theology of the Holy Spirit. His premise is that the Holy Spirit is the "forgotten" person of the Holy Trinity -- not in the sense that he is actually forgotten or left out completely, but that our understanding of the Spirit lags behind our understanding of the roles that the Father and Son play in the Godhead. We have neglected the doctrine of the Holy Spirit, choosing in most churches to either over- or under-emphasize the Spirit's power in the lives of believers.

"Forgotten God" is light reading, but offers questions that require deep reflection. Chan does not offer an exhaustive study of the doctrine of the Holy Spirit. Rather, his purpose in this book is to stimulate conversation and thought about the Holy Spirit, which will lead in turn to more Christians taking up further study of the Spirit from God's Word. He does this primarily through sharing testimonies of believers who exemplified spirit-filled lives (such as Joni Eareckson Tada and Francis Schaeffer), and by gently confronting pre-conceived notions about the work and purpose of the Spirit through asking tough questions ("I think most of us would...choose a physical Jesus over an invisible Spirit. But what do we do with the fact that Jesus says it is better for His followers to have the Holy Spirit?") and pointing out uncomfortable truths ("Let's be honest: If you combine a charismatic speaker, a talented worship band, and some hip, creative events, people will attend your church. Yet this does not mean that the Holy Spirit of God is actively working and moving in the lives of the people who are coming.").

Highly recommended reading for any Christian.Get more detail about Forgotten God: Reversing Our Tragic Neglect of the Holy Spirit.

The Pacific Immediately

First they shot the t.v. series, then they wrote the book. And it shows. If you have read any of the underlying histories upon which The Pacific is based, you will find this a severely compromised read. The book lacks structure, theme, passion, originality, careful editing, literary or academic rigor. Although this can easily be chalked up to the rush job attempt to get a companion piece out in time for the mini-series, other factors are also at play.

First and foremost is the fact that Mr. Ambrose has taken on his father's mantle of WWII historian, but lacks the chops to fill Ambrose Sr.'s shoes. The Pacific strings together episodes in the lives of a pilot and various marines in a patchwork that doesn't give the reader any sense for each individual's achievements, or for the greater successes/failures of the war. It's as if he read a handful of stellar biographies and autobiographies, cut and pasted the high points, and put them down in random order.

Eugene Sledge's autobiography is particularly butchered. Ambrose takes the incident with Lt. Mackenzie and turns a complex, revealing mismatch between enlisted marines and their officer into a bland encounter that leaves out the crucial detail: Mackenzie had failed to completely empty the grenade, and but for its location it would have killed several marines as a "harmless prank."

This book was given to me as a gift by a good friend, so the price was exactly right. But for anyone trying to decide whether or not to lay out $26+ for a WWII book, I'd really suggest spending it on something else.Get more detail about The Pacific.

The Belly Fat Cure: Discover the Carb Swap System and Lose 4 to 9 lbs. Every Week This instant

This is not your usual low carb diet. This diet works! You'd be surprised how much sugar is in foods, even veggies. Also, just reading your labels, can help you make diet changes that really help. The recipes are pretty good, especially if you're accustomed to an unhealthy diet. The only thing is, I took his advice but added more fruit, veggies, and beans. I just had to cut back on some of the breads and pastas. I lost 10lbs in and a half EASILY, not even following it to the letter. Also, most of it was from my waist. I usually lose in my legs or but, and end up looking like a chicken(big belly, skinny legs). I like this diet.Get more detail about The Belly Fat Cure: Discover the Carb Swap System and Lose 4 to 9 lbs. Every Week.

Shop For A Whole New Mind

This is a wonderful book and a fascinating, easy read. Whether the author is right about the future of right-brain dominance however is problematic as computer dominance (a left-brain function) is clearly primary in the business world today. I do believe in the importance of imaginative, creative thinking and perhaps people will wake up to the importance of right-brain thinking may eventually realize that computer manipulation has it's limitations. I would recommend this book particularly to anyone who is thinking about a career in design, advertising, or any arty businesses.Get more detail about A Whole New Mind.

This is easily the best psychology book I have ever read! Not only does it describe how people are convinced to do things, buy things or behave it discusses the actual studies that show why those things work.
Some reviewers have complained that there are no practical examples. Well if you read this and think about it you can see how you have been influenced, how to avoid being swept up by the professioal infulencers (car salesman, tv ads etc) and how to get other people to do what you want.

Discount How to Raise the Perfect Dog: Through Puppyhood and Beyond

I bought this book through Costco last year and recently misplaced it. I thought it was gone for good and could not find the book at any of the big box stores and this was VERY upsetting. When I ordered several new copies through Amazon, of course my missing copy showed up. That's ok.

I raise and breed Australian Shepherds. A WONDERFUL, SMART and all around perfect companion dog for most but not all families.

These dogs are not for everybody. Cesar Millan has done such amazing work rehabilitating dogs and training people that I am a TOTAL/COMPLETE fan and admirer of his method and approach to training. When this book came out I had to own it and I now own several copies to put into some Puppy packages before the puppy goes home to its new family.

I own most of his other books and videos and as soon as the paperback version of this book comes out I will include it in ALL of my puppy packages.

Right now I can only afford to put one into each "First time Aussie" new owner.

I can't say enough good things about this book.Get more detail about How to Raise the Perfect Dog: Through Puppyhood and Beyond.

Lowest Price The Devil in the White City: A Saga of Magic and Murder at the Fair that Changed America

I bought this book at my dad's suggestion. I had recommended "The Devil and Sherlock Holmes" by David Grann to him, and this was his response. The Devil in the White City is an extraordinary true tale of human, communal triumph and utter human depravity.

Larson's research is impeccable and every turn sheds light on the lives of the men and women of Chicago in the late 1800s.

The history links the vision and development of the World's Fair of Chicago with the life a serial killer stalking his victims, mostly young women newly entering this strange, industrial world.

Larson's writing style sets a lively pace, never dragging readers down with irrelevant detail. He relies on letters, journals and newspapers to draw a picture of the burgeoning city and its inhabitants. I was completely immersed in this world; enjoyed every page.

A delightful, intriguing book that soars to heights of glory and sinks to the depths of hell. I highly recommend this book.Get more detail about The Devil in the White City: A Saga of Magic and Murder at the Fair that Changed America.

The Judge does a great job of citing numerous references and court cases while detailing just how anti-constitutional our government has become. The First 90 Days Immediately

Management books are usually not a major topic of interest for me.

Michael Watkins presents a methods for success for new leaders in positions with various issues.

The methods involve: promote yourself, accelerate your learning, match strategy to the situation, secure early wins, negotiate success, achieve alignment, build your team, create coalitions, keep your balance, expedite everyone,

This book will not teach you how to be a leader but it can help you avoid problems when assuming command of groups or companies. Each chapter presents situations where people made mistakes and shows how they could have been avoided.

Overall, I found the book to be useful as I read issues where I could have handled better and learned a few tips to do things better.

I do suggest this book for people as it can help the beginner with advice and I think it can help the experienced manager with a few suggestions to consider.

Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game This instant

A fascinating, paradigm shifting book for die-hard baseball fans. You cannot argue with the facts this book explains--nor can you argue with the long-term success the Oakland A's have had by defying "conventional wisdom." More importantly, as a fan of a "small market" unsuccessful team, I'm amazed more Major League teams aren't following the model explained by Mr. Lewis in this book. I'm certain the general manager of the Kansas City Royals couldn't do worse if he'd take a look at this book. If you're a serious fan of baseball, you MUST read this book. You may not agree with Lewis' conclusions, but you'll definitely re-think how you evaluate what you're watching on the TV.Get more detail about Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game.

The God Delusion Review

More of the same. Religion is bad because... God doesn't exist because... not much more insight into a belief system that lacks proof (anti-theism). Most philosophy outside of theological philosophy lacks any staying power. This is the reason a student of philosophy and even the philosopher can spend his/her entire life speculating and never really find an answer to their questions... whereas philosophy with God at the center leaves one fulfilled. What a fantastic book! I have never followed Andre Agassi, or tennis for that matter, but heard this book got wonderful reviews so I thought I'd check it out. I had no idea how engaging this incredible book would be. I could not put it down! It is an extremely well written (no typos I might add), completely engaging, and openly honest account of Mr. Agassi's life. This is not just another celebrity autobiography written for monetary gains. It is the emotionally poignant tale of one man's trials and tribulations spanning from childhood to manhood. This is not a story of fame; it is a story of forgiveness, learning from the past, discovering one's self, and moving forward in life.
