Fearless: Imagine Your Life Without Fear
Shelley Campagnola, Professor and Executive Director of Ministry Resource, Inc., Canada
Max Lucado is a master at weaving story, real life and scripture together in ways that are easy to read and challenging to the heart. In Fearless, he does it again with wit, humor and timely sobriety, urging readers to acknowledge their fears, and to put them in their place in order to live courageous lives with their eyes fixed on Jesus.
Much of what he addresses concern things that can happen to us - the losses we can experience, the things we cannot control because they involve other people: losing a job, losing wealth, health, family, relationships, physical safety and political security among other things. We are not masters of our own lives after all but we can get caught up in thinking that other people are; that they hold power over what our lives will look like.
He also addresses the fears birthed from within: fears that God is not big enough; fears that he does not love us, does not want us, and does not listen to us; fears that we really don't matter to him or anyone else; or that our fears disappoint him and cut us off from him. Or, fear that maybe God doesn't exist after all and we've been living a lie.
Lucado dismantles all of this graciously yet methodically and completely, from the perspective of one who has grappled with these same fears at one point or another and has found the antidote in the Living and written Word of God. He invites us to join him in releasing our fear in the light of Christ's ongoing and powerful, not to be matched, presence.
Fearless is a good book for those who need the gentle yet insistent words of a friend and fellow sojourner to speak to patterns of fear that threaten to overtake and leave them living restrained or even imprisoned lives, falling short of the dreams God placed in their heart to pursue.
